Issue
The client, an online retail broker in the U.S., required a business plan for a funding round. The broker’s customer accounts were growing rapidly, but it was difficult to extract value from its account base. Attracting funding for further growth in the cyclical brokerage market in the midst of the global financial crisis appeared to be challenging. Spring Associates was asked to perform a strategic review and to create the business plan for the investor pitch.
Approach / Recommendations / Actions
The Spring Associates team analyzed the brokerage market, the broker’s client economics and its cost structure. The team identified significant opportunities to enhance the broker’s profitability. The analysis served as the basis for a process in which the company’s management and largest shareholders decided to implement a new pricing model. In close cooperation with the client, the Spring Associates team created the business plan for the new strategy.
Results
The capital, needed to further grow the company, was raised. The client implemented the pricing change and has seen both its profitability and its growth prospects improve significantly.
